“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” - Mark Jenkins

Week 10.5

Ni hao my dear friends and family,
First off, I am apologizing for not writing last week. This blog will be like week 10 ½ because it’s catching you up on a little bit more than a week. Because of this, plus it being a really eventful week and a half, it might be a pretty lengthy blog. Prepare yourself.
Let’s start off with the beginning of last week! Because of covering extra classes for Christine during her vacation and not getting my full 2 days off, I was able to get last Monday off. I spent the day with Chris and Nate and had a grand time. Nate left back to the states last Wednesday so Monday was my last day to hang out with him. We were originally planning on going to Happy Valley which is a large amusement park in Shanghai, but the weather was looking not so great and we didn’t want to risk going all the way there and having the rides be shut down due to rain. So instead, we met up for lunch at People’s Square and had some delicious Dim Sum, or at least I think that’s what we had. It’s meat dumplings with hot liquid inside that can scorch your mouth off if you’re not careful, but are really tasty. It took us a while to find the specific restaurant that Nate wanted to go to so we wandered looking for it in the back streets of People’s Square, which were pretty cool. After lunch we headed over to People’s park. We went to the Pixar exhibit in the park and it was pretty fun to see things like original sketches and models for all the Pixar movies. Most of the exhibit didn’t allow cameras but we got a few pictures with some of the large Toy Story statues.

We enjoyed the park for a bit after the exhibit, which is so beautiful and green. We saw old men playing chess on the tables under the trees, people sleeping on benches, children playing in the water trying to catch fish, and even a beautiful waterfall (man-made of course).

While walking through, a young girl and young man stopped me and asked in broken English if the girl could take a picture of me with the boy. I was surprised, as I had never been asked to take my picture with complete strangers before. Nate and Chris said they get it all the time, just because we’re foreigners. I politely declined because I felt uncomfortable having my picture taken by and with complete strangers. Chris and Nate gave me slack about it and I felt a little bad because you could tell the people were disappointed, but I still would’ve felt weird. But anyway, while enjoying the park, we decided to venture on over to the other side where they have some fun rides. They have fun things like a merry-go-round, bumper cars, and some small rides.

There was actually one that was pretty big (sorry I didn’t get a picture of it) that swung like a pendulum while spinning at the same time. So we rode the big one and bumper cars to make up for our cancelled Happy Valley plans. The big ride was so much fun! We were spinning slowly so you could still see the beautiful skyline of Shanghai while swinging so high that we were upside-down and above all the trees. Everyone around was staring at us and I think got a kick out of our screaming and having such a fun time on the ride. As we were waiting in our seats before the ride started, Nate heard a kid tell him mom, “Wow! Look! Three foreigners in a row!” ha-ha it was fun. We then moseyed on over to the bumper cars. Right as we were about to go in, some other foreigners asked us where to buy tickets. We told them and then told them we would wait for them because we were the only 3 in line anyway. So then a few other foreigners and a couple locals joined us in a fun round of bumper cars. We talked with the other foreigners for a while, they were pretty cool. They were all from different parts of Europe and here in China for a short internship, but they were in a different part of China for the internships. They were just going through Shanghai before they headed back to Europe, as their internships were over.

After the park, Nate decided he really needed to see my apartment before he left for the states, I’m not sure why. So we headed back to my apartment to just hang out and rest after lots of walking. Nate and Chris were a little surprised when they realized I wasn’t joking about living down the street from brothels. We pass two just coming from the subway to my apartment. I was not anticipating any sort of company so before they came in I had to go in and clean up a little bit and take down some laundry that was hanging up to dry. We just rested and talked. It was nice to sit down on a couch in air conditioning and drink some cool water after a day walking in the hot humidity. Even though it was cloudy and raining lightly on and off all day, it was still so humid and unpleasant outside.

After hanging at my place for a little while, we went down to find some dinner. We walked around and went down a street that I had never been before. There were lots of delicious looking restaurants and Nate picked a good one to eat at. I wasn’t really hungry and was still feeling a little sick from riding the rides after a big lunch, but the food was good so I had a little. Chris and Nate then walked me back to my apartment and I said goodbye to Nate. I’ll miss hanging out with him here in Shanghai; he’s a cool kid. Hopefully, in December, when Chris and I return, we’ll get together with Nate and Austen again and have lunch or something.

Tuesday I worked half day, well a little more than half due to the trainers coming. Trainers from Home Office came to observe our classes and give us feedback. They observed my Music 2 class and my Play Level 6 class. Music went...so-so. To be honest, that is my worst class of the week. The kids are a little crazy and the parents don’t follow at all, nor do they care about controlling their kids. They just sit there and the kids scream and it’s just not so great of a class. It was like that before I was the instructor, so Christine warned me. It’s gotten a little better since I’ve taken it over, but it’s still not that great. My Play class went pretty well. I actually didn’t think it was too great because the kids were really distracted that day and didn’t participate as much as they usually do, but the trainers said it was a great class.

I usually leave at 1 o’clock on Tuesdays, but they started giving feedback at 1:00, so I didn’t get to leave until 3:00. The trainers said the structure of my Music class was pretty good, but I need to remember some key exercises and need more classroom control. This is mostly gained by speaking with the parents individually before and after class, gaining a relationship with them, and educating them on how to deal with their kids in class. Sadly, most of the parents don’t understand English in this class, which is another reason it’s my hardest class. The trainers gave me good feedback though and I will work hard to improve. Like I said, I didn’t think Level 6 went too well, but they said it was great. I asked for individual feedback and they just said to be more pro-active and involved with the kids during a certain part of the class. Besides that, both Jo jo and I did well together. I love teaching with Jo jo, we work so well together. In class the other day, she was so funny; she kept saying in class to the parents what a super assistant I am and how she loves me because I’m a “super assistant”! Haha she’s so great.

Last week was also voting. Every two months we give the parents ballots after class with out names on them. They then rate their satisfaction with you as an instructor but putting their ballot in the voting boxes, marked 1 to 5 stars.

Before the week, we had to write down our goal for voting results. Since I was still a brand new instructor last voting, this was my first time and wasn’t sure what my goal should be. Other instructors said I should go for a 4.5 but I was worried that it would be shooting high and I might get disappointed. Well, the results came in on Monday and I got a 4.6! Yay! So I was happy about that and hope that next voting I will maybe even get a 4.75! That would be way cool, but we’ll see.

So we have been preparing for the annual Musical Festival. This is a big deal with Gymboree where lots of centers get together and put on this big event for parents and their kids. We, as instructors, but on this big show for them where we sing and dance. This year’s theme is Star Trek. It really has nothing to do with Star Trek, but is about Gymbo going to different planets in the universe and seeing new sights. It’s actually supposed to be based of the book The Little Prince, but I don’t know how well it connects. Anyway, we had picked our song for the dance we were going to do for our assigned planet. Christine had hired her friend to choreograph and she started teaching everyone the dance on Monday when I had the day off. No worries though, because I wouldn’t have missed much. They had recorded the dance practice to show me and I asked where William was. They said he was recording and didn’t need to learn this part because he would be dancing with me...yeah. Apparently I lucked out and got the solo and would also be doing a duet with William during the dance. Awesome.

Oh, after we submitted our music to home office to be approved, we found out that the Pudong Center had submitted their song just a few hours before we did, and they picked the exact same song! Of all the songs in the world, they picked the same one as us. So we were planning on changing and picking a new song until today, when we got an email informing us that the Music Festival has been cancelled. We were in shock! They do this every year, we’ve already started advertising, planning, selling tickets, etc. I’m not even sure why, but I guess as of right now, everything is cancelled. Crazy. So we’ll see what the news is on that in the next few days.

Last Thursday I was planning on going to Yuyuan Garden with Sherry on my off day, but it was pretty rainy, so we postponed our plans and are planning on going this Thursday. Thursday evening is when my Chinese tutor Cathy comes. She was a lot more organized and prepared this time. She actually gave me a lot to work on, more than I’m comfortable with, but I guess you don’t learn by being comfortable. She is supposed to come for two hours, but ended up staying for three. It would’ve been two, but she kept getting distracted and wanting to just talk about random things instead of focusing on the Chinese lesson. She still only charged me for two hours though. I think she wants to hang out and teach me to cook and stuff, but I don’t have a ton of free time, especially with my online courses possibly starting this week (I’ll explain why “possibly starting” later on). She’s cool though, so maybe we’ll hang out sometime. But on to Friday!

As you may or may not know, Friday was my birthday! Yeah! I’m 20 years old! Man, I forget how young I am sometimes. I’m only 20? That’s it? But it was a really great birthday, let me tell you about it! First of all, I got online before I headed to work and was surprised by a beautiful Skype call! Mom, Christopher, Ariana, and Morgan called me and sang Happy Birthday to me, or I should say, sang Ju ni shun er kuai le! Yep! Mom taught them how to sing happy birthday to me in Chinese and they were harmonizing and everything (like normal for my fam) and it was just wonderful! I loved it! It was still Thursday evening for them, but they wanted to make sure I had a good morning since it was Friday already for me. Once I got to work, I was surprised once again! Sherry is such a doll, she got me a present! I wasn’t expecting anything from work except for maybe a couple happy birthday wishes, but I got so much more! Sherry gave me a super fun, sparkly fedora and gold sequins on it. Man she must know me, I love it!

Christine sang me happy birthday in Cantonese and did a little dance with it too. I recorded it but am not sure how well I can upload the video. I don’t think you can put videos on the blog, but I might post it on Facebook, so keep your eyes open. The word spread that it was my birthday so everyone was telling me happy birthday all day, it was so sweet. Consultants and SA’s and everyone kept popping their head into the instructors’ office to wish me a great day, they’re all so sweet. Jenny also heard it was my birthday and ordered me cake! Jenny is the center director by the way. It was a small, individual cake, well two actually. The cake here is so mild, not very sweet at all. I like it though. So Leona, Sherry, and I shared the cake, as Christine headed to the Hospital to get her eyes checked (they go to the hospital for everything here – even just to get your eyes checked). I was supposed to take over Christine’s Music class in the afternoon and Sherry took my Play Level 4 class but the Music class was canceled so I just had a lazy afternoon. It was really nice.

After work I rushed home to clean up my apartment. Sister DeVries was coming over to bring me my cake and presents that mama had sent over with her the month before. Mom sent a cake mix but Sis. DeVries offered to make it since I only have a toaster oven and not a full size one. She and her husband were going on a double date with Bro. and Sis. Larkin so they all came over to my apartment to visit and drop things off. My apartment is definitely not fit for company with how small it is, but they didn’t complain.

We chatted, I opened my presents (mom sent me two books – Where The Wild Things Are and Oh, The Places You’ll Go, as well as a card and a USB drive with 3 CD’s by Parachute Express and some Music from Chris by Suburban Legends. Thanks again for the gifts mom and Chris! Love them!), and Sis. DeVries lit the candles and they sang to me. I was so happy from having such a great day and being around such great people that I forgot to make a wish, but that’s ok. The cake was so good! Mom sent one of my favorites, carrot cake. And Sis. DeVries decorated it do beautifully. We actually didn’t have time to eat any cake as they were going to dinner and I was supposed to be meeting up with Sara and roommates. The DeVries and Larkin’s were supposed to be at my apartment at 7:00 so I planned to meet up with friends at 8:00 for dinner, but they didn’t show up until 7:30ish so we were a little rushed.

I was a little late meeting friends for dinner, but it was fine. I met them at the mall at Zhongshan park just one subway stop away. I actually wasn’t planning on meeting up with them but Michael texted me in the afternoon to see if they could take me out for dinner and give me a present. So I rushed over and met them and we had a great dinner! I offered to have them come over to my apartment to eat the cake that had not yet been touched and they excitedly said yes! Sara explained that they were hoping I would invite them over because the present they wanted to give me would be better given in a personal area, instead of at the mall. They were giving me hints about my presents and were a little disappointed when I guessed correctly during dinner ha-ha. They were saying things like “You can see it, but you can’t hold it or feel it really.” I guessed a video and was right. So we then took some taxi’s over to my apartment.

When we got back to my apartment Lincoln pulled out his laptop and put up the video. They didn’t have a real camcorder so they just used a digital camera that would only record for up to 3 minutes at a time. The whole video was maybe 10 or 15 minutes long, but in many segments. It was such a great video though! They had stayed up late the night before making it in their apartment. They put up an old mattress as a backdrop with a paper tapped to it that said “Happy Birthday” in marker. It was basically like a talk show about me. Sara was the host and after talking about how much she cared about and loved me, she invited “special guests” to come and talk about how they felt about me. She would ask them questions like “So, what do you know about Alyssa?” and “Why is she special to you?” Oh it was so precious! It was hilarious and so touching at the same time. They also sang Happy Birthday to me in both English and Chinese. Michael even got out his Guitar and plated a portion of a song for me. The video was William's Idea and was their “fearless director” they said. It was very, very sweet. I gave Sara my USB drive to put it on so I could keep it but she hasn’t brought it to me yet. I loved it so much though and am going to keep it forever! They kept saying in the video how they hope I will stay for a whole year and not leave in December. It was so touching. I love them so much; they are such dear friends, especially Sara. I love that girl so much. After the video we served cake but I realized I don’t have enough plates and utensils to serve 6 people, so we used everything like forks, spoons, knives, and people shared plates and bowls or just ate the cake straight off the tray. They had to eat very quickly though and then leave to catch the subway before it got too late.

After they left I Skyped with mama and she could tell what a wonderful day I had from the big smile on my face. It was such a fun birthday, way better than I every could’ve imagined.
I had lots of left over cake and knew there was no way I could eat more than half a cake by myself before it would go bad so I took it to work with me the next day. Everyone was so excited to try the “American cake”! Haha it was fun. Some loved it, and others didn’t so much. Pretty much everyone liked it but thought the frosting was too sweet. They thought the cake itself was really sweet too, but they liked it. Lynn, one of the consultants who doesn’t speak much English, told Jo jo to tell me that the cake tasted like it was made of magic! I’m glad she liked it :) Monday we had our monthly center meeting and Jenny bought yet another cake! So much cake this week. Jo jo’s birthday was the day before mine so they sang happy birthday to us and had a traditional, bland Chinese cake. It was pretty good though, just not as good as carrot cake.

Later that day all the instructors headed over to Home Office for a special training for instructors who would soon be leading. I don’t know why, but Christine and Yo yo wanted everyone to go, not just the ones who are preparing to lead. The Home Office didn’t want all of us to come, but Yo you talked them into it. We all headed over, got there early, and helped set up. The training was pretty boring and all in Chinese. Sara translated some important stuff, but I was mostly trying to not fall asleep. I got some good notes from the PowerPoint (as that was in English) and so it was a little worthwhile. Christine and Yo yo wanted to go to KTV (Karaoke) after the training, but no one else did, including me. They were a little bummed but I wanted to go home and prepare for classes the next day. I also saw Paulina while at Home Office and we got to talk for a little bit. She told me about how things are going with UVU and trying to get more interns from there. She also told me she’s noticed that I’ve lost weight- Yay! I like being thin and in shape again. She’s really great though, I like Paulina a lot.

Oh, church was good Sunday, by the way. Chris gave a talk and it was really great. All the talks were, I really like my branch. I signed up to substitute for Nursery, so I might get called to do that every once it a while, that should be fun. There is a branch activity this Saturday, but Chris and I can’t go. Bummer. We also had a really great lesson in Relief Society. Last week I didn’t recognize the woman who taught Relief Society, and that’s because she and her family only come once a month. They live way out in some tiny province outside of Shanghai and it takes them like 4 hours one way to get to church, so they have to leave their house at 4am to be on-time. They come once a month so she can teach and to pay tithing, but other Sundays they just have church at home. I think that’s kind of cool :)

So Christine asked me the other day about staying for the whole year. I sadly had to tell her no, as it’s really important that I finish up school. I really need to get more done before I leave on my mission. Sara was very sad to hear that even though I’ve been telling her for the past week or so, but it was official when I told Christine. I was a little bit sad to hear me say it too, even though I know it’s what is best. Christine then told me that even though she knows I need to go back to the states, how much she appreciates me and how much they all like me and will miss me. I will miss them too. I can’t believe I’m almost on the downward slope! Sad!

But speaking of finishing school, I’m feeling a little frustrated with my online classes and things. First of all, the person over interns at UVU changed positions so now it’s someone new. He is requiring a lot more of us and now I will have to write to him twice a month on how work is going and how I am doing on completing my objectives. I also had to re-fill-out the internship learning agreement and rewrite my objective. I finally got that done and sent back to him today after getting signatures and things.

As for my distance education classes, I’m not even sure if I’ll be able to do them. One of them requires I purchase packets from the bookstore and the other requires I take the exams in the testing center. Apparently I can take the exams through other University testing centers if approved and stuff, but I doubt I will be able to get that done in China. Obviously these people don’t think I’m very distant, even though it’s a “distance education” course. I’ve emailed the professors and hopefully I can get things worked out. Either that or I’ll drop the classes and just get back into classes next semester. Even though it would be really nice to get these classes out of the way, it would also be nice to not have to do them while working 40 hours a week and taking Chinese lessons and getting distracted by the wonderful-ness of China. So, we’ll see how it works out.

I got a lot of birthday wished via Facebook! Thank you for those! I really appreciate it. Also, happy birthday again to Elaina and Ashley! My darling niece and beautiful sister-in-law. Other random notes: I have so many mosquito bites and lost my anti-itch cream! No fun! My neck has also been hurting and been giving me headaches. I think it’s from a cyst or something, so that’s not fun. Hopefully the pain goes away or I might have to go see a doctor and get it checked out. My cooking is getting a little better, so that’s always good. Hopefully I will learn to really cook someday, like my mother, instead of these cheap meals like fried rice. A meal is a meal though, right? What else? Oh, I have recently fallen in love. Well, not really. There are two boys who sing and put videos up on YouTube and they’re pretty amazing. Michael Henry and Justin Robinette – check them out if you want. I can’t stop listening to them. They have great voices and are really fun.

I’m glad to hear that my brother and sister-in-law are proud survivors of Hurricane Irene! I’m so glad you guys are safe. I’m also dying to know the sex of your darling little baby so hurry up and open the envelope! I’ve decided that if it’s a boy you should name him Charles, or Charlie. Either one. I’ve been enjoying your blog Jodi! It’s awesome, not nearly as boring as mine. As to my friend Jillian Newell! I love reading your emails! Haha she just arrived in Weihai, Shangdong Province, China to teach English. It’s pretty far from Shanghai, but beautiful I’ve heard. I’m on her email list and love reading about her experiences. They make me laugh and so much of it is what I went through and was shocked by when first arriving in China. I read her emails, laugh, and say to myself “Yep! Welcome to China!” You’ll love it though Jilli! I promise :)

Wow, so I think that’s it. There is probably more to say but I am sick of typing and you are probably sick of reading. Thanks for reading anyway though. I love you all and hope you have a great week!

Love,
Ge Li Sha

Week 9

Well hello again! Ni hao :)

It’s been a long, but pretty good week. As many of you may know, my birthday is next week! Yay! I will be 20, finally. I keep forgetting that I’m only 19, and it will be nice to not be labeled as a “teenager” anymore. Today was Christine’s first day back and I was able to convince her to give me Monday off! Last week I only got 1½ days off, plus I was scheduled more classes than anyone else, plus it’s for my birthday, so she gave in and let me have it off. Chris, Nate, and I are planning on hanging out as a last time before Nate leaves/Alyssa’s birthday sort of thing. We’re probably going to Happy Valley the amusement park, so that should be fun! I’ll let you know how it goes.

Well, I’ve started my Chinese lessons. My tutor came last night for our first lesson. It went pretty well. The only problem was that over the phone she asked what level I was, so I told her very beginner. But when she got there, we got through the whole first lesson in a half hour with still another hour and a half to spare. I guess I’m not as beginner as I thought. I mean, I’m pretty beginner, but I have good pronunciation I guess, I know all the numbers and some greetings, and I can read most PinYin. PinYin is Chinese with English characters, but it doesn’t read the same. We kind of killed time and she improvised so it was fine, but hopefully next week will be better when she’s a little more prepared and organized. I’ll keep practicing with my co-workers too, so I’m sure I’ll learn quickly. There’s a new rule at the office that the instructors and consultants have to get together and talk every afternoon after our lunch break. It’s to build communication, and so that we can discuss the kids, but we usually just end up chatting about whatever. They really want to practice their English and I want to learn more Chinese, so I’m pretty popular during that hour. It’s fun and good practice.

Since yesterday was my off day, I treated myself to a massage. There is a massage/spa place just down the street from my apartment close to where I go grocery shopping. The ladies were so nice and the owner spoke English. The massage was pretty good, but nothing extremely special, like I was expecting an authentic Chinese massage to be like. It was good though and I’m sure I’ll go back.

So yeah, classes went well last week. I taught more classes than usual, and a lot of Music. Actually 2 or 3 of the classes were cancelled because of low attendance due to bad weather, so it wasn’t too busy. This week, Christine is back and Jessie and Sherry are done with training so they’re taking over some classes. I am now going to feel so bored during the day. I used to teach 6 classes on Saturdays and now I just teach 3, how boring. Jessie and Sherry each took over one play class and one of my Music classes was cancelled (but it will probably be replaced with a new class soon).

Sherry now has Thursdays off which is also my day off, so that’s exciting! We live pretty close to each other too, so we are definitely planning on hanging out. We’ll probably go to Yuyuan garden next week, so that should be fun. Jessie passed Music training, so I’m not sure when, but she’ll be teaching Music fairly soon. She will probably have to get comfortable with Play first, then try on more Music and slowly ease into it. Because we have enough instructors now, they’re not just going to rush her into it like they did with me.

Christine had a fun time in Thailand and apparently brought us gifts that she will bring on Monday, but I won’t be there, so I’ll get it Tuesday. She talked of some awesome things that really made me want to go to Thailand (more than I already did) and she also talked of some other things that made me really want to avoid some certain areas when I go. She was feeling unprepared for classes today though, having been gone the past week and a half. She even printed out the words to the songs in Music classes and hung them on the wall so she could look at them if she forgot during class. It was pretty funny, but I’m not sure this should become a habit.

I wasn’t able to go to church last week, so I am so stoked to go this week! Going two weeks without church is just draining. Last Sunday wasn’t too bad though, and pretty peaceful actually. I had received the Ensign in the mail just a couple days before so I spent my breaks reading that and studying my scriptures. By the way, I live in DeAnna’s old apartment and she and her husband had ordered the Ensign so it still gets sent to their address so I get it every month. It’s really nice actually. The Larkin’s son Pete and his wife are in town, I’m not sure if they’ll still be around by Sunday but it will be cool to see Pete if they are. I haven’t seen him in years (for those of you who don’t know, Pete used to be in our Layton ward. He and Ariana even dated for a short time in high school).

I know I mention it in pretty much every blog, but I just have to say how crazy the weather is here, once again. It rains so much! The other day, I had to wade through a small river on the street corner that went almost up to my knees in order to get to work. People were walking barefoot on the sidewalk, holding their shoes so they didn’t get soaked. The rain was overflowing from the gutters up on to the sidewalk; it was ridiculous. There was a small river going through the yard of the resort. When I got to work I had to ring my new jeans out over the sink and then put them in the dryer. One of the girls that was at our center for training didn’t have an umbrella and was soaking wet. I had some extra pants and we gave her a shirt and a towel and threw her clothes in the dryer. You have to be prepared with stuff like that in order to live here in Shanghai.

Last Monday we had a fun day. Christine was gone so things were a little less strict, but we didn’t have to change much of anything at the center. We didn’t change Play setups, nor Music theme display, so all we had to do with prep art supplies and count props. We finished up our work and still had half a day to kill. So we watched educational movies in the music room. We watched two documentaries on babies. They were actually really educational. I will be able to use what I learned from watching them not only as a Gymboree instructor, but also as a future mom. I had the idea to project the movie on the ceiling so we could lie down on the mats and watch it. My co-workers thought I was joking but it totally worked, so we did it! Half way through the first documentary, Yo yo noticed Jessie fell asleep, so we had to sit up and watch it on the wall. It was still great though.

Trainers will be coming on Tuesday to observe our classes. I was feeling super nervous before, but now, not so much. Mostly because I’ve realized that they don’t care as much about my classes because I’m not an employee of Gymboree, just an intern. I still have to do a good job, but there’s not as much pressure. William is improving actually, so it’s been a relief around the office knowing that he might be able to pass training at the end of the month, but we’ll see.

Oh, the cutest thing today at work! Well, there is a little boy named A Tong Mu, and he’s there pretty much every day. Even when he doesn’t have classes, his grandpa watches him and doesn’t really know what to do with him, so he just brings him to our center. We all play with him and our office is like his second home. He can’t talk too much, just a few words, but he can say Assa, which means Alyssa, and Bobo, which means Gymbo, as well as a few other words that always make me smile. He’s so cute! He knows the whole Gymbo dance! We sing any verse and he can do the actions so well, which is pretty impressive because the song is all in English. I tried to record him doing the dance but he kept just trying to grab the camera, but it’s a decent recording. I’m not sure if I can upload videos to my blog, but I’ll probably upload it to Facebook. A Tong Mu is so darling though, I just want to kidnap him and take him home with me when I leave :) Pretty sure that would be illegal though....

Well, life is good. I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed by the culture the past week or so, but I think that’s going away. I really do love being here and the people, but it’s hard sometimes being around people who are all so alike, and yet so different from yourself. It’s so different here, but I just have to remind myself that different isn’t bad, it’s just different. I know it’s a great blessing for me to be here right now. I’m gaining experiences that will benefit me in my future career and family life. I’m also gaining amazing friendships and memories, as well as awesome missionary prep-experiences. Thanks for all your support and love.

Wo ai ni! (I love you!)
Love,
Ge Li Sha

P.s. Ge Li Sha is my new Chinese name, I changed it.

P.p.s . I went to eat at a little restaurant near my house this evening (feeling too lazy to cook) and one of the cooks is a very, very cute young man. That’s saying something, because I’m not really attracted to Chinese men. He spoke a little English and was very nice, and very cute. So hopefully I don’t spend too much money going out to eat every night at the restaurant. Haha just kidding, I won’t, but it was good food too, so I’m sure I’ll go back.

Week 8

Hello again!
For those of you who heard about the Typhoon here in Shanghai last week, don’t worry, I’m just fine. It actually changed directions and didn’t affect Shanghai very much. It was stormy and windy, but that’s all. We still had work, although attendance in classes was low. They were going to cancel church but decided that conditions weren’t too bad. I was glad to hear that because I don’t get to go to church this week so having no church for two weeks in a row would’ve been pretty hard. The weather can’t really make up its mind at this point. I was out earlier today and it was pretty darn hot. About ten minutes ago it looked and sounded like I was going through an automatic carwash, it was raining so hard. As of right now, it’s pretty clear, has stopped raining, but there is still quite a bit of thunder and it’s pretty loud too. The weather sure is weird here.

Christine has gone to Thailand for her annual leave, just for about a week and a half. While she’s gone I’m taking over most of her Music classes, and this is also why I don’t have Sunday off this week. I’ve been teaching lots of Music classes so far this week and am trying to mentally prepare myself for this weekend when I’ll be teaching quite a few more classes. Work has been going pretty well. We’ve been working with William a lot; he’s improving, slowly but surely. He is so nice and tries very hard, but my patience is still wearing thin, as he’s just not picking things up at a normal rate. I still try to be kind and understanding though.

Sara and I usually don’t have any of the same off days, but this past Tuesday we both had a half-day off. We went out to lunch after work and then met up with her roommates to hang out. It was Michael’s birthday but he didn’t get off work until around 6pm so we met up with William and Qing Qing until he got off work. Qing Qing’s English name is Angela, but I just call her by her Chinese name. I’m also starting to call Sara by her Chinese name, which is Chen Chen, and Michael by his name, A Du. I still call William and Linkin by their English names though. Their Chinese names are a little difficult for me to pronounce. Anyway, we hung out at IKEA and got some food until Michael got off work and then Linkin came and met up with us. The six of us then went to Karaoke.
Enjoying Karaoke! That's Qing Qing, by the way. She's so cool!

Me and Michael! I forgot I still had it zoomed in ...

Sara and Linkin being adorable :)

This Karaoke place was pretty legit too. It was super fancy, like a 5-star hotel or something. We got a private room with a flat screen TV and a high-tech song list device-thing. They brought us drinks and we ordered some snacks too. It was way fun just singing and hanging out, I had a blast! I could even join in on singing happy birthday to Michael in Chinese, he was pretty impressed. Happy birthday in Chinese is “Ju ni shun er kuaile”...or something like that. I don’t know how to spell the English pronunciation, but that’s basically how you spell it. I really enjoy hanging out with that group though; they’re all way cool. I especially adore Sara; we are such good friends and I just love her. She is trying diligently to convince me to stay the whole year because she doesn’t want me to leave. She would love it if I just moved to China and stayed for the rest of my life, but I told her that wasn’t likely. She said she and Linkin would like to come visit America sometime in the next few years and are planning on coming to Utah to see me! How wonderful! At first I thought that Utah wouldn’t be too exciting for them, but then I realized that they love nature and the outdoors, so Utah is one of the best places they could come to in the states! I’m getting all excited about planning their trip to Utah and how I can take them to Zion’s and Park City and Temple Square!...But then I have to remind myself that they probably wont be coming for a while and there’s no need to plan the trip just yet :)

Before Christine went out of town she wanted to take us out to dinner, sort of as a “Thank you for covering my classes,” sort of thing. We went to this broken down, dumpy looking restaurant and I was confused why she took us there. I definitely underestimated it though! It was a Korean BBQ, so every table had it’s own grill. It’s an all you can eat place so they just keep bringing you food until you can’t eat anymore. You cook everything yourself right in front of you on the grill and then just get sauces at the bar (sort of like the Hot Pot place Christine took me to a while ago). They brought us everything, like vegetables, pork, bacon, beef, chicken, organs of some sort, crab, eggs, squid, you name it. It was really good too.
Korean BBQ!

Leona cooking ha ha I love her face!

The group! From left to right: Jessie, Yo yo, Niki, Jo Jo, Leona, William, Me, Sara, Christine's friend (I forget her name), Christine, and Sherry!

Christine also treated all of us for some beer and was a little disappointed when I politely declined, even though she knows I don’t drink. I told her that besides from everything, I don’t like the taste of beer. She responded with “Oh, me either! But I drink it anyway!” Her logic makes no sense to me, but oh well. Everyone was drinking except Sara and me. It was nice to not be the only one who wasn’t drinking; I didn’t feel so left out. I asked Sara why she wasn’t drinking and she said she doesn’t like beer, or any alcohol for that matter. She is such an amazing person and I can’t wait until I can share the Gospel with her! It’s like she’s just waiting for it! She won’t have to change hardly any of her lifestyle because she already leads such a wonderful, clean life.
Sara and me being awesome!
Jessie and Sherry are going through training right now so it will be really nice when they come back as they will be taking some of my regular Play classes. Sherry is so sweet and a way cool girl. We’re hoping that we get scheduled the same off days so we can hang out sometimes. We can’t ask for it though because Yo yo does the scheduling and we’ve noticed that if you ask to have the same off days as someone, she purposely gives you the opposite days off as them. She’s a little bitter like that I guess. Kind of lame, but we’ll see.

Well, the summer is flying by. Austen has returned to the states so now there are just three interns in the branch. Nate only has two weeks left and will be going home just a couple days before my birthday. We’re going to try and go to Happy Valley (a big amusement park here in Shanghai) for my birthday right before Nate leaves; that ought to be fun! I’m hanging out with Nate and Chris tonight. I’m not sure what we’re doing but I’m wanting to hang out with Nate a little more before he leaves and mostly wanted some American social interaction. Nate is a way cool guy and I will be sad when he goes. Chris is pretty cool, but we don’t get along as well. I’m sure we’ll still hang out though, but it won't be as fun without Austen and Nate to make it a fun group. Austen gave me his Astril account info before he left so I’ve had access to things like Facebook and YouTube, which has been nice. His account is good until October. I’ll be able to upload more pictures to Facebook and will be doing that soon, so remember to check those out ;)

The DeVries are a family in my ward and they recently returned from going back to Utah to visit family and home for the summer. They are actually in the same ward as Uncle Eric and Aunt Debbie out in West Valley, so my mother was so kind as to send me a few things with them as they came back this last week. I asked for a couple things and ended up getting bags of stuff. I did appreciate it, but felt a little bad that the DeVries had do carry that much stuff with them just for me. My mother sent me some things that I couldn’t find here that are convenient, as well as just comforting. She sent me a Swiffer, Clorox pen, hand sanitizer, soup, and some other comfort foods. She is so sweet. My co-workers were confused as they saw me come into work with bags of food. I told them my mother sent it to me from America and so they now think I’m too poor to buy my own groceries ha-ha. I can definitely afford to buy food here; it’s just that you can’t find things like Campbell’s Tomato Soup in the grocery store. I was also approached by two people in my branch asking if I was doing OK money wise. I was a little confused until it was explained that they thought I didn’t have enough money to buy food, as I was looking too thin. I guess I’ve been losing a bit of weight while here, but it definitely doesn’t have to do with being too poor to buy food. I guess just from walking everywhere, eating healthy, and singing and dancing all day for my job I’ve lost a bit of weight. I can’t tell too much and I don’t have a scale, but I’m feeling healthier, so that’s always a good thing.

Well, it’s still technically undecided, but I’m leaning more towards only staying here in China for 6 months. As much as I love it and would love to stay and really get more of the language down, I realize that school is pretty important too. Aside from needing to get some more school done before my mission, there are also some potential weddings of my friend’s that I would like to be around for in the spring. I guess things could change, but as of right now I’m counting on not renewing my contract and coming home in December. I’ve still got 4 months here and will enjoy them while they last. I love China and I love all of you.
Yo yo and me! She's so darling! She has an adorable smile but the flash was too bright, so it's not that great for this picture.

Alyssa Nicole Escalante

Week 7

Ni hao family and friends! Happy August! Another month has come and gone...crazy.

Well, I gave in finally. I did it. I plugged in my TV. Not because I really wanted to watch TV, but because I really want to learn Mandarin, and watching TV will definitely help. I’ll be hiring a tutor to come once a week to get extra help. I’ll also have my co-workers be helping me as much as possible. I think being able to speak Chinese will only be helpful in life and my future endeavors. Today was my day off and not feeling too social, I stayed home for the day. I had TV on in the background the whole day so I’ve been listening to Pokémon, Sesame Street, ABCD, and strange game shows all in Chinese. I’ve also been cleaning, cooking, Skyping with family, doing lesson planning for work, writing my summer internship paper, napping, and of course, reading Calvin and Hobbes. Life here is fun but busy, busy, so it’s nice to be able to have one day a week where I’m able to take a nap and do some relaxing things. I was able to Skype with Ila (Grandma Escalante) this morning before she heads back to San Diego. That was way fun to see her and talk with her, as well as practice my Spanish, which isn’t so great. I guess that just means I’ll have to move to Argentina for a year to improve and practice my Spanish ;)

Gymbo!

The past week has been busy with work, but it’s been fun. I think I mentioned in my last blog that we’ve hired a new instructor, our first male instructor. His name is William. He’s a nice person, he is ...but pre-training has been rough for him. I’m thinking that our center was in desperate want of a male instructor and so they hired the first one that came along. I’m don’t think he’s the best person for the job, but since he’s here, the other instructors and I have been working hard with him to prepare him for the training at the end of the month. I especially have been working with him on his English. I guess if being an elementary school teacher doesn’t work out, I could always fall back on being a speech pathologist, as I’ve been enjoying helping him with his English. Chinese culture is interesting though, even if he doesn’t pass training I think we’ll continue to do pre-training with him and send him to the trainings until he passes. Even though the bosses kind of realize now that he’s not the best fit, Chinese culture is to save face, so letting him go isn’t likely, which I find strange.
Like my new look?

Classes are going pretty well. I find myself quite busy with Play, Music, and getting Yoga ready, so I’m not looking forward to the fact that Christine expects me to be leading Play in another week or so. I guess it will be a good challenge for me though. With more and more Music classes I’m finding myself having to learn more Mandarin, which is good motivation for me to study and practice. The next theme for Music is Pacific Isles so I’ve been learning a lot of fun new songs from Hawaii, Samoa, and New Zealand. After learning these songs, I realized what a cool language Samoan is and how much I’d like to learn it! That’d be way cool if I went there on my mission, then Grandma and Grandpa and I would be twinners!

There’s a new YSA guy in the branch. His name is Matt, and he’s pretty cool. Tuesday was my half-off day so after work we met up for some Sushi and went to the Bund. Even though I’ve already been twice he really wanted to see it, so we went, but of course he forgot his camera, so it seemed like a little bit of a waste, but I’m sure he had fun. He’s here working for Disney English; I didn’t even know Disney taught English, but apparently they have schools all over the world. Cool.

This last weekend there was a ward get-together at the Farnsworth home. They are a really nice family. We’re not too closely related, but Philo T. Farnsworth is also his great-great-uncle, so it’s cool that we’re related back a ways. Saving myself a couple of trips, I was able to stay over-night at the Larkin’s after the party. The Larkin’s are so great. They were worried that their spare bed would be too hard, but, compared to my bed here in my apartment, it was heaven.

Also, on my off-day last week, I had a really fun day. I went with Chris and Rick to an old city outside of Shanghai. I wish I could remember the name of it.
It was a water town so rivers run all through it and they have bridges every block or so.

There aren’t any cars, people just walk and use boats, so the streets are pretty tiny.

A lovely local temple
The town is 1700 years old so the buildings are pretty awesome. We went on a boat ride to see the town and it was lovely, but quite hot.
Enjoying the sunny boat ride

Our boat guide was cool and let Chris and me try to row the boat. It was a lot harder than it looked.

We also ate lunch there, did some shopping.
The main bridge is called (once translated into English) “Letting Them Bridge”.

We were a little bit confused by the name until we realized that it’s famous for buying little fish and then you go to the top of the bridge and throw them off, or let them go. We then found the name pretty amusing. We, of course, bought some fish to throw off. I was brave and grabbed the live fish with my bare hands and threw it off into the river. Haha, it was quite an experience.

After a hot day, I went home, rested a little, and then went to Nate’s apartment where he let me use his Internet to get on Facebook. It’s nice to have friends here in Shanghai to take me to old cities and let me use them for their Facebook access :)

I keep thinking I’ll get used to the weather here, but I don’t know if I ever will. It will be blazing hot with the sun shining in the morning, and pouring with thunder by the afternoon. Either way, it’s always humid, so I can always count on that. Oh! There is so much fruit here that I’ve never heard of or even imagined. It’s so crazy looking and quite delicious. My favorite right now is called Huolong guo, or Drangon fruit. It’s so crazy looking! I’ll have to attach a picture. It really looks like something you would see in a Dr. Suess book or something.

Happy Birthday to my beautiful sister-in-law Lauren! Hope you have a wonderful day! Glad to hear that Mike and Jodi are enjoying their long trip to Connecticut. I love getting the family newsletter and hearing about how all the families are doing! I’ll be honest, I never read the family newsletter before because I was sure that if something important was mentioned, mom would just tell me. Now, I really love reading about how everyone is doing halfway across the world. I’m still undecided about staying for a whole year or being done after 6 months. We’ll see...

Well, thanks so much for reading and for your support! I love you all so much!

Love,
Alyssa
